About Alberta Native Bee Council
The Alberta Native Bee Council is a non-profit organization that was established in 2017 by native bee researchers, conservationists, and enthusiasts. The catalyst for forming the Council was the need for good, up-to-date science-based information on native bees in Alberta, the need for increased native bee monitoring efforts, and the demand for outreach.
Their mission is to promote conservation of native bee communities through research and monitoring, advocacy, education, and collaboration with others.
In 2017 the Alberta Native Bee Council launched a citizen science bumble bee box monitoring program. Similar to bird houses, bumble bees may or may not colonize a bumble bee nest box. In the literature, bumble bee colonization rates vary widely, but in Alberta we regularly find that about 25% of our bee boxes are colonized with higher rates in urban areas than in rural areas.
The Alberta Native Bee Council is a young non-profit organization, and yet they have achieved huge strides in knowledge about native bees in Alberta. They continue to be a valuable source of reliable information for everyone, from the general public to university researchers. In the few years since this organization was founded, they have run a popular and successful bumble bee box monitoring program, and with their partners, they were able to initiate an almost province-wide long-term monitoring program for wild bees in Alberta.
